John Houghtaling is one of the nation’s leading litigation attorneys and managing partner of legendary Louisiana law firm Gauthier, Houghtaling and Williams
. Houghtaling rose to national prominence in the wake of Hurricane Katrina by winning more than $30 million in settlements for hurricane victims and building owners. He has since collected over $100 million for individual clients. Frequently recognized as one of Louisiana’s best lawyers, Houghtaling was ranked by New Orleans CityBusiness magazine as one of the city’s top 50 lawyers four years in a row. In 2009, he was inducted into the magazine’s Hall of Fame. In addition to his work as an attorney, Houghtaling is also a successful entrepreneur. He cofounded Ocean Therapy Solutions with actor Kevin Costner. He cofounded Ocean Therapy Solutions with actor Kevin Costner, and the company’s innovative centrifuges were used by BP to clean up the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
As a community leader and philanthropist, Houghtaling has personally raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local and national charities. In 2008, he raised $20,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and also donated $50,000 to PLAN!T NOW, a non-profit organization founded by actor Morgan Freeman to provides assistance to communities at risk from the effects of storm and hurricane-related disasters. In 2009, he hosted the Dinner of the Decade with his friends, internationally renowned chefs Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud and Jerome Bocuse, an event that raised $100,000 for charity. He is also the cofounder of the Harris County Benevolent Foundation.
Houghtaling received his law degree from Loyola University where he was a member of the law review. He holds a B.A. from Emory University.
